What is Premature Ejaculation?

Premature ejaculation is a condition in which a man ejaculates with minimal sexual stimulation. Men who experience this condition ejaculate before or shortly after penetration.

Premature ejaculation is common. One in three men reports experiencing premature ejaculation at some point in their life. However, for it to be medically diagnosed as premature, ejaculation must always occur within 2 minutes or less from the start of sexual excitement. The man feels the inability to delay ejaculation (uncontrolled ejaculation). As a frequent cause of stress, frustration, and avoidance of sexual activity, for some men, a conversation with a doctor may help alleviate concerns about premature ejaculation. For example, it may be reassuring to hear that occasional premature ejaculation is normal and that the average time from the start of sexual activity to ejaculation is approximately 5-10 minutes.

Symptoms

The primary symptom of premature ejaculation is the inability to delay ejaculation for more than 2 minutes after penetration. However, this issue can arise in all sexual situations, even during masturbation. It's like having a timer on your phone that you didn't set, and it goes off too soon—except, of course, it's not nearly as fun! The good news is that this is a fairly common concern, and it doesn’t mean the end of your sexual confidence. With proper management and understanding, many men find relief. Sometimes, just knowing that this happens to more men than you might think can bring some comfort! If the situation persists, though, speaking with a healthcare professional can help navigate potential solutions, ensuring you take control of the situation—perhaps for longer than two minutes.

Premature ejaculation can be classified as follows:

Primary (premature ejaculation occurs from the first sexual encounters). Secondary (acquired) – premature ejaculation develops after having previous sexual experiences without ejaculation problems. Many men feel they have symptoms of premature ejaculation, but the symptoms do not meet the diagnostic criteria. Instead, these men might have naturally variable premature ejaculation, which includes periods of rapid ejaculation as well as periods of normal ejaculation.

Causes

It is not yet clear what exactly causes premature ejaculation. However, experts agree that healthy sexual function requires a combination of physical, emotional, and psychological factors working together in synchronized harmony. If any of these factors are "disrupted," premature ejaculation can occur.

  •  Illness (inflammation/infection of the prostate or urethra)
  • Other sexual dysfunctions (erectile dysfunction)
  • Hormonal issues (low testosterone)
  • Alcohol abuse
  •
Emotional factors:
  • Poor communication with the partner
  • Relationship conflicts, resentment toward the partner
  • Lack of connection with the partner
  •
Psychological factors:
  • Stress
  • Worrying about sexual performance/guilt
  • Abuz sexual, fizic, emoțional din trecut
  • Imagine de sine negativă, jenă
  • Cultural/religious beliefs related to sexuality
